If you seek a remote and serene park, look no further than this park situated along the Rio Grande River, bordering Mexico. It’s a tranquil haven, blissfully free from crowds. Remember to bring a 4×4 vehicle for the journey. While we didn’t camp, the campgrounds are truly remarkable, with each site offering space and privacy. During our visit over Christmas, we spent there two delightful days.
During our visit, we chose to stay at El Dorado Hotel, located in the ghost town of Terlingua, just 7 miles from the park. It provided a comfortable and convenient accommodation option for those who prefer not to camp. It’s important to note that each time you exit the park, you’ll encounter a border control checkpoint. Make sure to have your ID or passport with you.
Park is quite big and there is lot of driving and lot of unpaved road which we loved.
We drove in Old Maveric Road, Dragger Flat Auto and Grapevine Hills road and even we did primitive Old Ore Road. We couldn’t help but feel a tinge of regret for not camping amidst such a captivating landscape and remote campgrounds. It’s important to note that a 4×4 vehicle and sufficient fuel are essential for these off-road journeys.
Trails
Balanced Rock
To reach the trailhead of Grapevine Hills, you’ll drive through unpaved road. The hike itself is approximately 1.9 miles and considered relatively easy.
The Window Trail
This trail is close to Chisos Basin – Visitor Center. Though we only covered about 2 miles of the 5-mile total, it was enough to witness the captivating beauty of the surroundings and prefect place for sunset.
Santa Elena Canyon
This 2-mile trail follows the Rio Grande River through a beautiful canyon, offering views of Mexico across the water.
Hot Springs
A short stroll of just 0.5 miles leads you to hot springs. Along the border, you’ll come across vendors showcasing an array of handcraft from Mexico.
Big Bend from the road
There is so many beautiful spots that you just will stop and enjoy. One place that captured our hearts was Daniels Ranch, located near the enchanting Rio Grande Village. With its setting and panoramic views of the river, became the perfect place for us to stop and cook our dinner.
